The “Landscape Formations” residency program called its participants to a sustained encounter with the Pamarys region, engaging with it as a living process rather than a fixed place or representation.
A critical gaze toward change and its inevitability compels a broad interpretation of the theme of “Landscape Formations”: from ecological challenges that alter regional climatic conditions, reshape human routines and natural scenery, or geopolitical catastrophes that result in mass migrations and environmental destruction, to individual challenges in the contemporary world—searches for identity in a rapidly changing, unsustainable environment, feelings of insecurity, and attempts to give meaningful form to existence.
The word formation (Lat. formatio) means the giving of form, creation. Its primary meaning is linked to geological formations—structures of rock shaped under specific tectonic regimes and climatic conditions over long geological periods. Viewing landscape through the prism of formation opens up ways to move away from its superficial representation while still remaining grounded in the plein-air motif. In other words, when creating or re-creating landscape, one may begin from the constructs of the earth’s structure itself—and perhaps even reveal them to the viewer.
